At BALANCE eating disorder treatment center, we are aware that eating disorders do not discriminate.

Men are certainly no exception.

Understanding the common and dangerous misconception that eating disorders only affect women and adolescents, our team is dedicated to helping break the stigma and barriers male often face in getting help while struggling with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, disordered eating and body image concerns.

We are proud to be one of the only treatment centers that provide a range of treatment options for men in the New York City area including:

Did you know?

  • As many men as women want to change their weight (Andersen, 2000).

  • Men engage in eating-disordered behaviors (including binge eating, purging, laxative abuse, and fasting for weight loss) nearly as often as women (Mond, 2013).

  • Media objectification and sexualization of males is just as rampant as for females (Cohn, 2013).

  • Among the eating disorder diagnoses, binge eating disorder (BED) has the highest ratio of males to females.  Males make up about 40% of individuals with BED.

What is an eating disorder?

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of every age, sex, gender, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic group. National surveys estimate that 20 million women and 10 million men in America will have an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

While no one knows for sure what causes eating disorders, a growing consensus suggests that it is a range of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors.

When is it time to seek help?

If you believe you are struggling with an eating disorder, know you are not alone. Although there is not one specific test or quiz that can provide a yes or no answer, it is important to reflect upon your attitudes and beliefs surrounding weight, body image and food.

Please see our assessment here that may help identify that there are behaviors and attitudes worth seeking help for.
