Staff Spotlight: Primary Therapist Courtney Dowdell, MA, RDT, LCAT

Courtney Dowdell, MA, RDT, LCAT

What is your name, credentials & background?

My name is Courtney Dowdell; I am a licensed creative arts therapist in New York State and a registered drama therapist certified by the NADTA.  I received my master’s degree from New York University and I have worked in a number of clinical settings, including forensic psychiatry, child/adolescent psychiatry, and within educational systems. I have experience in the therapeutic use of the creative arts in the holistic treatment of individuals and groups.

What is your role at BALANCE?

I am a primary therapist and case manager at BALANCE.  I specialize in leading drama therapy groups in the DTP and IOP programs at BALANCE, which provide clients with the opportunity to express themselves through embodiment, reflective processing, and creative symbolism.  It allows for play, free thinking, risk-taking, exploring boundaries, experimenting, self-acceptance, and realizing potential! I also lead the outpatient Body Image group held every Wednesday evening at BALANCE.

What does a typical day for you look like at BALANCE?

The beauty of this work is that every day is different, as the group is dynamic and ever-changing. It is so important to remain flexible and practice being in the moment to meet individuals and the group where they are at; a "typical" day consists of leading groups, individual case management sessions, and collaborating with the client's outpatient team and the BALANCE team.

What is your favorite part about working at BALANCE and helping those recover from eating disorders?

My favorite part about working at BALANCE is the sense of community and connection that has been built among the staff and the clients. Recovery can be challenging; I am grateful to be a part of the BALANCE team and guide our clients through recovery.  It is truly a collaborative effort between the client, the BALANCE team, and the client's outpatient team to help those recover from eating disorders.

What is one of your favorite foods or recipes?

Chips and Guacamole.

Tell us about something you love to do? (an activity, hobby or interest)

I love to create flower arrangements in my home (flowers from Trader Joe's!).  I find it to be a very creative and relaxing process!

What is a fun fact not many know about you?

I have gone bungee jumping, sky diving, glacier hiking, and canyon swinging - I seek out adventure.
