Our Services

We treat the spectrum of eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, compulsive overeating and other disordered eating behaviors and body image issues.

BALANCE offers clients four distinct levels of care to meet their specific treatment needs including a day program, intensive outpatient program, step-down groups and individual nutrition services.

Family and friends play an important role in recovery and treatment outcomes. Therefore, we provide family support and multi-family group therapy to help family members better understand the disorder and their loved one.

Men's Group

A recent Harvard University study indicates that 25% of people with eating disorders are male. BALANCE has responded to their needs with the creation of a group dedicated exclusively to the treatment of men with eating disorders and disordered eating. The Men's Group provides a unique, safe and supportive space for men to examine their relationships with body, food, self, and society. Discussion topics focus on body image concerns, healthy exercising, emotional eating, relationship issues, nutrition, communication and coping skills.

Our Men's Group provides the following components:

  • 1 hour & 15 minute Group
  • Offers individualized care in a small, intimate group setting
  • Led by licensed psychotherapist, Jacob Pine, LCSW
  • Meets Wednesday's from 6:15 - 7:30 PM

Outpatient Group

BALANCE created an Outpatient Group to address the need for ongoing support, which has been shown to be effective for relapse prevention and sustained recovery.

The Outpatient Group provides the following components:

  • Ongoing weekly Therapy Recovery Weekly 75-minute Group
  • CBT, mindfulness, experiential and psychodynamic approaches; topics are developed based on client need and include coping skills, body image, identity, communication skills and cultural influences
  • Ideal as a step down from more intensive outpatient programming

Meal Support

Our Meal Support Group at BALANCE was developed to provide three levels of support:

1. Additional Support: As an add on to Individual Nutrition Sessions or our weekly Outpatient Therapy Group
2. Program Step Down: Clients who have finished our weeknight program can step down to our Meal Support Group for further support
3. Introduction to our Services: For clients who are interested in a slower start to treatment. This can be used as a stepping stone into program.

Our Meal Support Program includes the following components:

  • 90-minute Group
  • Provides "real life" meal experience at local NYC restaurants and exposure to a variety of cuisines
  • Strives to help clients foster a more neutral relationship with food - an essential part of recovery
  • Led by a Registered Dietitian

BODY IMAGE GROUP

Meets weekly on Tuesdays from 6:45pm-8:00pm

Lead by Natalie Jacobs, LMFT, licensed psychotherapist with monthly nutritional guidance from Therese Bridges, MS RDN CDN, registered dietitian.

The objectives of the group include gaining insight into the relationship with one's body and how eating disorder behaviors and urges are often a result of the way in which emotions manifest in one's physical body. Members will gain support around practicing emotional regulation throughout the week and practicing self-compassion when going through a therapeutic process. The group will foster understanding about how poor body image, lack of sense of self, and low self-esteem impact our identity and make change difficult. Monthly group nutritional sessions will provide education about food neutrality, debunking food myths, and encourage clients to not allow body image and appearance to control behaviors, interactions, and our way of being in this world.

This group is not limited to a specific type of eating disorder and will allow clients to explore the underlying issues that impede them from maintaining a stable recovery.

Emotional Eating Group

Melainie Rogers is a recognized expert in the areas of overeating, Binge Eating Disorder (BED) and obesity. She has worked with this population for over 14 years and has co-created the Reframing Recovery TM treatment model for BED.

BALANCE is pleased to announce that we will be offering a new Emotional Eating Group. Contact 212-645-6903 or balance@balancedtx.com for more information.

Although BED is on the spectrum of eating disorders and shares commonalities with Anorexia and Bulimia, there are real and significant differences in treating the BED client. Therefore a BED-specific therapy group can be beneficial to members as they are afforded the safety and support of others struggling with common concerns. The group will be conducted by practitioners with specialized training in BED who have an understanding of the unique treatment issues involved in addressing the needs of the BED client.

  • Weekly 75-minute Group
  • Women and LGBTQAI ages 18 and older
  • Discussion topics will include: food and emotions, body image and shame, self-esteem, social and coping skills, sexuality, societal and cultural influences, family and relationships
  • Individual meal support and nutritional counseling are available if additional support is needed

Family Group

Although an eating disorder affects each individual in a unique way, it almost always has ramifications on family and loved ones as well. In addition, family influences the recovery process.  At BALANCE we feel it is important to offer support and provide education to those significant others around you so that they can have a deeper understanding of the illness, the recovery process and learn more about how they can be supportive and helpful.

Multi-family group provides an opportunity for families to meet along with their loved ones to receive education and support as well as to discuss the challenges and successes encountered in the recovery process.

The group is:

  • Run on a biweekly basis
  • A complimentary add on to our weeknight program
  • Available to clients in any of our outpatient groups/programs (for an additional fee)
  • Led by a Licensed Therapist
